Hospitals are extremely expensive places to run. Not only does a hospital need to be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, administrators also need to pay for round-the-clock specialized personnel and the cost of the extremely-high monthly energy bills. It is no wonder that some hospitals and clinics simply cannot pay for those high costs month after month. If it is not a busy hospital, it is common for administrators to close down a wing or the hospital altogether. There are still many pieces of medical equipment, however, that are in working condition when this happens. In most cases, these machines and extra supplies are refurbished and sold to another hospital or clinic as used medical equipment. However, other places decide to donate this equipment to medical schools.

It is incredibly important that there is medical school equipment available for the future doctors of this country to use! As potential patients of these future PhDs, we need to make sure that these individuals are trained property in school so that they are ready to practice once they receive their degrees. Used medical equipment is the perfect tool on which medical students can practice their developing skills.

Medical equipment includes everything from wrap bandages to electrocardiogram machines (EKG machines). Doctors need to know everything from how to apply bandages to stop bleeding to knowing how to interpret basic machines. Most medical doctors start out in the emergency rooms of hospitals where they are on call three nights a week. These individuals need to know how to make decisions in a split second, no matter how tired they feel. Therefore, when their nerves and focus have almost run out, they need to know how to do the most essential basics without even thinking. All the practice they have in medical school will help them become the best doctors they can be before they even make it into the work force.

If you have access to used medical equipment and supplies and would like to help the future doctors of America, or any country worldwide, you should look into donating them to a medical school. The gift of education is one of the best gifts you can ever give!

Medical coding programs provide you with specialized education to be better equipped in your profession. Many of the coding programs are flexible, allowing the students to go for classes in the evening, or even online.

But of late, there has been a mushrooming of schools offering medical coding programs, so much so that you might have a tough time choosing one. When you need to take up one, you will do well to keep an eye on a few things before you take the leap. Factors such as equipment, admissions, requirements, accreditation, and of course faculty are key here.

A good medical program is one which has a wide range of computer equipment as majority part of the coder’s job requires him to work with computer programs and softwares. Apart from this, you also need to check the accreditation status of the school; such a school has been reviewed by a third party so it’s worth taking a shot.

Most schools have the details regarding academic credentials, work experience, and specialized training about their faculties or instructors on their websites. Contact them and talk to them if need be. Doing so will give you with a better picture.

Also, while choosing the program, think about your everyday responsibilities. If you are someone who has some family responsibilities to meet and is hard pressed for time, you may go for an online program or take up a part time program with courses in the evenings or weekends that suit you best.

People who benefit the most from a medical coding program are the ones who have a clear picture in mind. So be clear about what you want from the program if you are to tread the success path.

So, you and your wife were enjoying a nice afternoon together, watching television on the couch, when Junior walks in and ecstatically announces that he has been accepted to Harvard Medical School. After the initial whoops and hollers and the pride that swells in your chest, your son leaves to announce the great news to his friends. You and your wife turn to each other and smiles fade and eyes widen when suddenly, thoughts of the cost hits you. Stunned, you slump onto the couch in silent dismay.

There’s no need to panic when this happens. Attending medical school is a very respectable goal, and money should not stand in the way. However, very few parents or other family members can afford to put someone through medical school, and that’s where medical school loans come in handy.

Where do you obtain a medical school loan? Start with your own local bank branch and see what kinds of loans or offers they can suggest. Your next step should be to get on the Internet or ask your bank loan officer if he or she can suggest other alternatives. One of the next best ways to obtain a medical school loan is through a private student loan offered to those entering medical professions. For example, there are a number of Federal Student loans, like Stafford or other types of medical type loans offered by various health field providers and sponsors.

However, keep in mind when looking for medical school loans, that the interest rate of that loan may keep you, or your son and daughter, in debt for years to come. Studies released have shown that the average medical student loan debt for those attending United States universities is roughly $100,000. That’s a big weight on such young shoulders, and compounded with the cost of living and lower than realized pay of many medical entry level pay scales, can take the wind out of anyone. Being so much in debt may cause students, and parents, a lot of stress, so consider carefully when searching for options that may help take some of the pressure. Encourage your student to apply for as many scholarships and grants as possible.

While medical schools around the country and the world recognize the problems of student loans for their students, they don’t provide any answers to address this issue. Nearly 50% of students who take out student loans of any kind, of various amounts, take years to repay those loans. Young men and women entering the physician field today are facing some tough times. Gone are the days when medical careers were the highest paid in the job market. Balancing their pay scale with the cost of medical insurance and loan payments, and most doctors today are struggling to make ends meet just like any other white collar professional. Times are hard, and are not likely to improve any time soon. When searching for a medical student loan of any amount, just make sure you shop around and try to find one with the lowest interest rate possible. Also, try to encourage your student, or yourself for that matter, to start repaying or saving up for that debt repayment instead of allowing it to drag out for years.

Graduating from medical school and obtaining your Doctor of Medicine opens up many career paths. Here are a few common routes after medical school.

Most graduates complete a residency. Residencies are the postgraduate training for medical school graduates. This is where you specialize in the field of medicine that you desire to practice. This period after medical school can take two to eight years depending on your specialization. The good part is that you finally get paid for your training. Although your salary as a resident is only a fraction of your earning potential as a licensed physician, it’s a good start at least.

If your chosen specialization requires more training after the residency period, this is called a fellowship. These professions are highly specialized areas of medicine such as pediatric surgery, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery and many other fields. This continuing education can take one to three years depending on your area of specialization.

Another option after your residency is to land a position as a salaried physician. This means that you work for a large organization that provides you with a set salary and benefits. Many doctors choose this route for the stability and growth.

If you want more freedom in your methods and a more flexible schedule, private practice might be the way. In private practice, you are your own boss. You must attract your patients and do your own collections when it comes to insurance companies. The downside can be the higher costs of practicing. You must pay for your location and equipment as well as employees to help with general office maintenance. Most private practice physicians link up with other physicians so that they can share the costs of overhead.

The academic world is another career path. You can find a position at a teaching hospital or a University. This route will probably allow you to do more research than other positions. You will also have the challenge of teaching students like you once experienced. Some physicians choose this lifestyle because it allows them to keep learning about their field and lets them deal with cutting edge technology and practices.

Working for a community clinic is another option. Many physicians find this work satisfying because you are dealing with patients that really need care. This can be a low-income clinic or even a clinic in a third world country. It is an opportunity for you to offer your skills to people that have no other place to turn. In this environment, you usually work with a team of doctors who share the same goal. A drawback for working in a community clinic is that your salary may not be as high as in other positions.

No matter what field you go into after medical school, there are many options out there. Your degree can take you to different places and different environments. So explore your options and weigh the pros and cons. After so many years of grueling studies, this is your time to shine and really practice all you’ve learned.

Getting into medical school is becoming increasingly competitive, in part, because of the declining economy. Strong candidates who used to target law degrees or business school are turning their interest toward medicine, a less volatile field. Consequently, more competitive candidates are now pursuing a medical career, making the submission of an excellent medical school personal statement even more important.

The American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS®) is a centralized application processing service for medical school applicants. AMCAS® includes ample space for a candidate’s personal essay. The AMCAS® medical school personal statement (and institutions’ follow up secondary essays) allow the applicant to demonstrate his or her distinctiveness as a candidate.

Some of the most useful AMCAS® advice I can offer includes ensuring that your personal statement is at its best: The essay is one of the most crucial aspects of applying to medical school.

Some of my tips for an excellent medical school personal statement include the following:

1. Do not use exaggerate the language used. Pretend that you are being charged for each word you write. How can you keep the imaginary cost down?
2. Do not use quotations, clichés or questions.
3. Avoid medical terminology unless absolutely necessary to convey a point. A layperson should be able to easily understand your essay.

4. Don’t forget to spell and grammar checks. (You might be surprised how many applicants do not do this.)

5. Highlight your accomplishments but do not sound arrogant. Even one bad sentence can bomb your essay and leave the committee worried about who you are.

6. Avoid wordiness. This is the most common mistake I see people usually make. Keep your personal statement to less than one standard, single-spaced page.

7. Make an outline. This really does make a large difference in the quality of the final essay.

8. Leave yourself enough time to write your statement. A good medical school application essay may take weeks or even months to write.

9. Most importantly, ensure that your essay demonstrates that you are a distinctive candidate. If any sentence in your essay could have been written by someone else the phrase should be omitted.

Finally, consider working with a skilled professional. Because applicants can unknowingly undermine their chances of success with poorly compiled application materials and underdeveloped medical school admission essays, a qualified, personalized medical school admissions consultant provides a great advantage.

Medical school consulting companies come in a variety of forms. Some are bigger businesses that focus on admissions to several types of graduate programs – not just medicine. Others are smaller and provide a medical focus, but have a pool of consultants of varying quality. Finally, best of the companies offer good medical focus and a highly knowledgeable medical consultant who works one-on-one with clients. These professionals are ex-admissions officers from highly respected medical institutions. They have the inside knowledge of how medical school admissions work, providing individualized guidance to optimize applicants’ personal essays, AMCAS® and interview skills.

When choosing a medical school admissions consulting company, a candidate should verify the company’s references and research its consultants. Elite companies that offer both the medical focus and a highly experienced consultant who works one-on-one with clients offer a large advantage for pre-medical applicants, especially during these competitive times.

Going through medical school can be quite hectic. Everybody knows that it’s practically impossible to get through medical school without sleepless nights of studying. The stress and difficulties that you face while you’re in medical school can easily cause mental, emotional, and physical breakdowns. The tremendous pressure that many medical students have to deal with is enough to make anyone’s life difficult. If you are having a hard time dealing with medical school, then you should check out some of these tips on medical student well-being:

Get help from your school

One of the first places to go for help is your school. Some schools have student well-being programs that are aimed at helping students deal with the major stresses and strains of medical school. Here are some of the ways in which your school can help you:
- Get counseling from a guidance counselor or from a student well-being program
- Get help settling your health insurance as a medical student
- Talk to your teachers or classmates about the stress and difficulties that you are enduring
- Ask for recommendations, referrals, or resources on student well-being

Keep your relationships strong

Some students tend to get so caught up with their studies that they end up neglecting some of the relationships that they have with others. It’s important to keep strong relationships with your friends, family, and colleagues. Having good relationships is a reminder that you are not alone in dealing with the burdens of medical school. Make sure to always set aside time to socialize and spend time with the people that matter the most to you. The last thing you would want is to have a degree in medicine, but no friends or relatives to share your success with. Some even find that having strong spiritual relationships, such as their relationship with God, helps greatly in dealing with the hardships of medical school.

Be in good shape

Another aspect of life that some medical students tend to neglect is their physical condition. As a student of medicine, it is important to realize how essential physical health is to your emotional and mental well-being. Keeping your body in good shape will help keep your energy levels high and the exercise can be a form of stress-relief. Remember that part of having a good work-life balance means taking good care of your mind, soul, and body.

Pick up a hobby or recreational activity

While you are in medical school, it can be difficult to separate your academics from the rest of your life. It helps to have a hobby or a regular, recreational activity that can take your mind off of all the work that you do. Try to find something that you enjoy doing, like painting, biking, playing an instrument, reading books, or getting into photography. Not only will a hobby help you get away from work, but it can also enrich your personality and your life-experience. Just knowing that you have other things going on in your life, aside from medical school, will help your well-being.
