Medical School Admissions – What is Required?

Medical School Admissions - What is Required?

One of the first things on most people’s minds when they are considering going to a medical school is, what are the admission requirements? Am I qualified to attend? Here’s a quick look at some of the answers.

Of course, the requirements for every school will be different, but one of the standards for most all of them will be the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). This is a standardized test that is not easy by any means. It includes a lot of problem solving questions and ones that take a lot of thinking through the answer.

To help you prepare for this difficult test, you’ll find MCAT test prep books that go a long way in getting through the process. Other materials are also available as well, including actual classes you can attend for preparing for the tests. They can be very helpful.

Another area that medical schools look at is your GPA. Naturally, it needs to be high. Not only will they look at that, but also many will want to know about the activities you were also a part of in school.

An area of importance for nearly all schools will be letters of recommendation. Having letters written by faculty members, doctors or managers who you have personally been involved with have an impact with those in charge of admissions.

Finally, the actual interview process with the medical school itself will carry a lot of weight in whether you are granted admission or not. If you are not passionate and seriously committed, chances are they will know this and not accept you.

These are a few of the major admission requirements of most of your larger medical schools. As mentioned earlier, each school may have different requirements, but this will get you started.

There might be Gimik in 2010. When Mylene guested on Ruffa and Ai, she said, “Abangan nyo po yung muling pagsasama-sama ng isang barkada…” Camille Prats was also a guest, so she smiled and said, “Parang alam ko yan, kasi ako ang younger version nyan…” Also in an interview with WIll Devaughn sa Juicy, he said that he is currently working on Gimik 2010. Kaya parang meron talaga… It won’t be the same without Ricky though. :-( Kaya mag-watch out na lang tayo!

A bachelor's degree is required before you can COMPLETE medical school. Some schools have programs where you can start your bachelor's degree and then finish the degree while you're in medical school and taking medical classes.

At least in the USA, you must have a BS before getting your doctorate.

One of my collegues got admitted in medical school by taking alot of advanced math, psychology and law classes. I am not sure if he planned it that way or if he just liked taking those subjects.

As a person who has been through medical school, I know that people go to med school with both science backgrounds as well as non-science backgrounds. My aunt was an English major and went to medical school, but the majority of students are science backgrounds.

It is important how you did in science classes because science classes are different from other classes like history, music, etc. Medical school classes are just like undergrad courses in chemistry, biochemistry, pathology, etc. If you do well in science courses, you'll likely do well in medical school. If you do well in non-science courses, you might do well in medical school but the classes aren't the same so it would be hard to tell. Generally, your run-of-the-mill biochemistry class is much more difficult and is taught in a different way than your general sociology class. Success in science is a much better predictor of medical school success than success in other classes.

Also, people who were science majors can have advantages in medical school as well. A biochemistry major or a microbiology major who has already learned everything already will be able to learn more things faster than someone who has never heard about Staphylococcus or Gram staining.

The most important things med schools look at for admission are:

    1. MCAT Score
    2. Undergraduate science GPA
    3. Overall GPA

Typically the admission requirements are very similar. If you were to complete all the requirements for medical school you probably would have completed what you would need for dental school also. You could try contacting the admissions offices of prospective dental schools and ask for materials and requirements.

    1) You've done enough volunteering, shadowing a doctor would just be a cherry on top.

    3) It really depends, It's better to have 3 letters from professors that really know you and can do a good job for you, rather than 6 letters from professors that have no idea who the hell you are and half ass it.

    4) Honestly, getting into medical school, graduating, and getting accepted into a surgical residency is hard enough. You should be happy enough with just getting accepted into the residency.

    5) Actually, I heard that medical schools like non-traditional students. They want a well rounded student that can do things besides biology. But make sure you have a high science GPA and MCAT score to show them that you can cut it with the other traditional students too. From what you've told me, I think you have a solid chance a making it into a Med school.

both. They get the complete picture to see how well-balanced you are.

  11. scapulagirl1990 says:

    Go for it.

You don't need to take any science courses beyond what are required by medical schools if you don't want to. The prerequisites will be plenty of preparation for medical school, if you do well in them.

The fact that you can write proper sentences is a nice plus :)

I don't think there are any medical schools in the U.S. that accept any applicants that do not take the MC AT. Sorry, try for some schools outside of the U.S. :-/

    1) Medical school is 4 years.
    2) You need a 4-year degree to apply to medical school, but there's no medical major. To fulfill premed requirements, you probably want to major in bio and chem, but as long as you pass the MCATs, it doesn't matter what you major in.
    3) A lot. 40k a year and up.
    4) Yes, it is very competitive getting in and staying in.
    5) Usually people major in bio and chem, and take calculus and several semesters of physics as well to prepare for the MCATs.
